Stop Leaks Before They Start — From Inside the Concrete
Here’s a truth that most waterproofing companies don’t want you to know: surface coatings always fail eventually.
They crack. They peel. UV rays destroy them. And when water finds one tiny pinhole, the entire system is compromised.
But what if the waterproofing wasn’t on the surface? What if it was inside the concrete itself?
That’s exactly what AQUAFIN®-IC does. It’s not a membrane. It’s not a paint. It’s a crystalline slurry that penetrates deep into concrete and forms permanent, insoluble crystals that block water forever.
For waterproofing in Pakistan from Karachi’s humid high-rises to Lahore’s waterlogged basements this changes everything.
What Makes AQUAFIN®-IC Different?
Most waterproofing products sit on top of concrete. AQUAFIN®-IC does the opposite. It goes inside.
The product arrives as a grey powder in a 25 kg bag. You mix it with clean water between 6.75 and 8 liters per bag and apply it with a brush or spray equipment.
But here’s where the magic happens:
When this slurry touches concrete, its active chemicals react with the moisture already present in the concrete and with the byproducts of cement hydration. They grow needle-like crystals that fill every capillary pore and micro-crack they can find.
These crystals are permanent. They’re insoluble. And they become part of the concrete itself.
Where Should You Use AQUAFIN®-IC?
Basements
Here’s the biggest advantage of AQUAFIN®-IC: it can be applied to the inside of a wall and still stop water coming from the outside.
If your basement in Lahore or Islamabad is leaking and you can’t excavate from the outside, AQUAFIN®-IC is your answer.
Drinking Water Tanks
Certified for potable water. This means you can use it in overhead tanks, underground reservoirs and water treatment facilities without any health concerns.
Concrete Containers and Structures
Any concrete structure that must hold water or keep water out is a candidate. Swimming pools, sewage treatment plants, retaining walls, tunnels all benefit.
Roof Slabs and Terraces
Applied as a slurry over the entire roof surface, AQUAFIN®-IC provides seamless, joint-free roof leak proofing that can’t be damaged by foot traffic or UV exposure.
Step-by-Step Application
Surface Preparation
The TDS is very specific about what the concrete needs:
1. Firm and load-bearing — no loose or crumbling concrete
2. Pore-open — smooth surfaces must be mechanically roughened
3. Free of contaminants — oil, grease, paint and curing compounds must go
4. Matt damp — wet enough to activate crystals, but no standing water
High-pressure water jetting (400–2000 bar) is the recommended preparation method. This cleans the surface and opens the pores simultaneously.
Mixing
· Pour 6.75 to 8 liters of clean water into a clean bucket
· Add the powder while stirring vigorously
· Mix for 3 minutes
· Let it rest for 3 minutes (activation time)
· Mix again briefly
The tool should be a drill with a mixing paddle running at 500–700 rpm.
Application — Two Layers Minimum
Apply the first coat with a wide brush, working it vigorously into the concrete. Don’t just paint it on scrub it in. The crystals need to penetrate.
Apply the second coat while the first is still sticky (within 60 minutes). Never let the first layer dry out before applying the second.
Curing — Critical for Success
Here’s where most people make mistakes. Crystals need moisture to grow.
· Protect the fresh coating from sun, wind and rain for 24 hours
· Keep the surface damp for at least 3 days (mist with water regularly)
· In dry conditions, use water-soaked jute sheets
· Full water pressure resistance develops after 7 days
Special Notes for Pakistani Conditions
Fly Ash in Concrete
Many ready-mix plants in Pakistan use fly ash. The TDS warns: fly ash content must be maximum 30% of the binder. CaO content must not exceed 15%. If your mix has unusual proportions, contact Aquafin Pakistan’s technical team.
What AQUAFIN®-IC Cannot Do
The TDS is clear: AQUAFIN®-IC cannot be over coated with tiles, plaster, screeds or paint. If you need to tile over it, you’ll need a bonding bridge consult technical services.
It also cannot be used as an additive to concrete or plaster. It is a surface-applied treatment only.
Efflorescence — Normal and Not a Defect
The reaction between AQUAFIN®-IC and free lime in concrete can cause slight efflorescence (white powdery deposits). This is not a defect and can be removed with a broom.
Frequently Asked Questions FAQ’s
Q: Can AQUAFIN®-IC be applied to old, existing concrete?
Yes. As long as the surface is properly prepared cleaned, roughened and matt-damp it will penetrate and form crystals. It is excellent for retrofit waterproofing.
Q: How long does the protection last?
Permanently. The crystals are insoluble and become part of the concrete. Even if the concrete dries out completely, dormant chemicals reactivate when moisture returns.
Q: Is it safe for drinking water tanks?
Absolutely. It meets DVGW W-347 and W-270 standards. Rinse the tank thoroughly with fresh water before filling.
Q: Can I apply it in Karachi’s summer heat?
Yes, but with precautions. The application temperature range is 5°C to 30°C. In extreme heat, work early morning or late evening. Keep the surface damp longer.
Q: What happens if it rains during curing?
Protect the fresh coating from rain for at least 24 hours. Rain can wash out uncured material. If rain occurs, assess the surface afterward you may need to reapply.
Conclusion
AQUAFIN®-IC represents a fundamentally different approach to waterproofing. Instead of trying to keep water out with a barrier on the surface, it transforms the concrete itself into a watertight material.
For waterproofing in Pakistan whether you’re dealing with a leaking basement in Lahore, a water tank in Islamabad or a terrace in Karachi this crystalline technology offers permanent, self-healing protection that surface coatings cannot match.
One application. One cost. A lifetime of dry concrete.
